Cozy, Romantic Seattle Ferry Engagement Photos

A couple kisses on a large ferry to Bainbridge Island for their Seattle engagement photos.

With fall right around the corner, Vivian and Devyn wanted their engagement session to reflect Seattle’s cozy descent into autumn weather. The perfect solution was to hop on an iconic symbol of the PNW for some Seattle ferry engagement photos.

Planning Seattle Ferry Engagement Photos

To the extent possible, we really wanted most of the ferry to ourselves for this shoot. It’s hard to feel really “in the moment” with swarms of sleepy commuters or nosy tourists looking at you. So, we planned to take the very first ferry to Bainbridge on a crisp Monday morning, starting just after 6am (it was worth it, I promise.

The Destination: Bainbridge Island

One of the best things about taking theferry that you end up on darling Bainbridge Island, with an abundance of cozy diners, coffee shops, and rocky beaches.

Outfits for Ferry Engagement Photos

Since the ferry gives you a mix of industrial and natural textures plus changing light and wind, your outfits can lean into that. Here are ideas to make your photos feel timeless, authentic, and you:

1. Layers are your friend.
Wind can be surprising, sun can be glaring, clouds may shift fast. Bring a light jacket, cardigan, or shawl you can throw on between shots. Not only practical – also beautiful in photos (movement, texture, cozy vibes).

2. Choose fabrics with movement.
Think flowy skirts or dresses, chiffon, linen, loose shirts. The ferry can get windy and we want to lean into that, not fight it.

3. Coordinate but don’t match.
Pick a color palette that complements the surroundings: muted tones, earth tones, soft blues, creams, greys, maybe a pop of rust or navy. Avoid super loud patterns (they compete with the view), but a subtle pattern or textured fabric can add richness (think linens and woven sweaters).

4. Footwear counts.
Decks can be slippery; surfaces rough. Bring shoes you can walk in comfortably (flats, boots, clean sneakers) and maybe a dressier pair if you want a change. If heels are part of your vision, pack something more manageable for moving around.

5. Props and what to bring.
Feel free to bring your favorite boots, a blanket, games, coffee. These small details add authenticity and help you get comfy.

I’m Jaime, an Oregon wedding photographer with a passion for intimate and intentional weddings. I'm also a trail runner, mountain lover, and recovering project manager, who thrives in tall peaks old growth forests, rocky coastlines, and everybody-knows-your-name wine bars. This place isn't a destination for me - it's home. I know the tides like the back of my hands, and I'm not afraid of wind, rain, and a little bit of sand.

I take a primarily documentary style approach to my galleries. You'll find an abundance of stolen glances, gentle hand squeezes, and shared laughter. I'm also thoughtful about composition, lighting, and colors, which all help tell the real story of your day.

Your portraits will feel natural and not overly-posed, and we'll make sure that you get to enjoy your day without it feeling like a photo shoot (unless you want it to!).
