Josh and Shelby planned a trip from Boston to Oregon to celebrate their June birthdays together. The two planned a number of hikes in western Oregon’s top locations, as well as a series of tastings in wine country. Josh had a secret up his sleeve, though – he wanted to propose during their stay near Cannon Beach, Oregon. On our call, Josh spent so much time gushing about how beautiful and special Shelby is, I knew this was going to be such a fun day. Together, we planned the optimal Oregon coast proposal for the two of them.

I loooove the element of surprise and delight that come with proposals, and I take my role super seriously! If it makes sense (you’re hiking to a very remote area where tourists would be an odd sighting), I’ll do my best to stay fully hidden. Otherwise, I most often disguise myself as a casual hiker / tourist and keep my camera hidden right up until the moment.
I’ll work extra closely with the organizing partner to make sure we are FULLY aligned on time, location and strategy, so there’s no extra stress or anxiety. I also know these moments are hard to hold in, so I always deliver at least a handful of photos the same night of your proposal so you can use them to tell friends and family right away.
Planning an Oregon Coast Proposal
The Oregon Coast is one of those rare places that feels both expansive and deeply personal. It offers wind-carved cliffs, endless skies, and beaches that feel like they go on forever. It’s the kind of setting that doesn’t need much dressing up. Just being there, wrapped in a blanket of sea air and soft light, feels meaningful. Proposing here is less about making a grand gesture and more about choosing a place that reflects what matters: connection, intention, and a little sense of adventure.
Whether it’s tucked into a favorite trail, standing barefoot in the sand, or watching the tide roll in after a long coastal drive, the Oregon Coast holds space for the kind of moments you don’t forget. It’s simple, a little wild, and full of possibility—exactly the kind of beginning you want to look back on.
What to Wear for Your Proposal
The key to shoots on the Oregon Coast is to be ready for anything: layers are your best friend. Think cozy knits, light jackets, and something wind-resistant if you’ll be near the bluffs. Even in summer, the breeze off the ocean can feel cool, especially in the morning or evening. Footwear that can handle sand and short walks is a good idea too, especially if you’re venturing off the beaten path.
When it comes to what to wear, neutrals and textures work beautifully with the natural tones of the coast. Soft, flowy fabrics move well in the wind and photograph effortlessly — nothing too stiff or structured. Earthy tones, creams, muted greens, and gentle blues blend seamlessly with the landscape without feeling too styled. The goal is to feel comfortable, grounded, and like yourself, so you can focus on the moment and not your outfit.
