You Should Elope in Slovenia

This hidden gem should be at the top of your list for your European adventure

Smartno in the Brda region of Slovenia

I first had the pleasure of visiting Slovenia as part of Runcation’s traverse in the Italian Dolomites and Slovenian Alps. I instantly fell in love with the scenery and communities. Tucked between Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, this small but incredibly diverse country offers everything from towering Alpine peaks to rolling vineyards and coastal charm — all without the overwhelming crowds of its more famous neighbors.

My second time in the country, I spent most of my time in the country’s southwest region, making my way through world-renowned wineries and charming coastal towns. If you find yourself there, be sure to visit Edi Simčič.

Why Choose Slovenia for Your Elopement?

Slovenia is a country of contrasts in the best way possible. In just a couple of hours, you can go from hiking through the dramatic Julian Alps to sipping wine in a valley that feels straight out of Tuscany, before finishing your day with fresh seafood in a Venetian-style coastal town. It’s this diversity that makes Slovenia so special—not only will you have endless breathtaking backdrops for your elopement photos, but you can craft an elopement experience that’s as adventurous, luxurious, or laid-back as you want.

Whether you envision exchanging vows on the shores of an emerald lake, in a medieval hilltop village, or overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Slovenia literally offers it all.

The Landscapes: A Buffet of Backdrops

One of the biggest draws of eloping in Slovenia is the sheer variety of landscapes to choose from.

  • The Julian Alps & Lake Bled – If you’re enchanted by towering peaks, misty forests, and turquoise lakes, Slovenia’s alpine region is a dream. Imagine saying your vows on the shores of Lake Bled, with its fairytale island church and medieval castle towering above, or hiking to a secluded mountain meadow for a private, awe-inspiring ceremony. For an even more off-the-beaten-path experience, Lake Bohinj offers all the beauty of Bled but with fewer tourists.
  • Wine Country & Rolling Hills – If your vision leans more toward golden sunsets and sprawling vineyards, Slovenia’s wine regions—like Brda and the Vipava Valley—might be the perfect fit. Often compared to Tuscany, this area is full of charming villages, historic stone farmhouses, and wineries producing world-class (yet underrated) wines. Picture an intimate ceremony overlooking endless rows of grapevines, followed by a private wine tasting and candlelit dinner under the stars.
  • The Adriatic Coast & Piran – For couples drawn to coastal charm, Slovenia’s tiny but stunning slice of the Adriatic is pure magic. The town of Piran—with its Venetian-inspired architecture, winding stone streets, and seaside views—feels like a quieter, more romantic version of Italy. You could say your vows on a scenic terrace overlooking the sea, take a boat out at sunset, or explore the nearby salt flats and olive groves for unique photo backdrops.

A Culinary Experience to Remember

Eloping in Slovenia isn’t just about the landscapes – it’s also an opportunity to indulge in some of the best (and most underrated) cuisine in Europe. Be sure to watch the Chef’s Table episode about Ana Roš of Hiša Franko for a beautiful look at one of the country’s best culinary artists.

Slovenian food is an incredible fusion of Italian, Austrian, Hungarian, and Balkan influences, with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. Whether you’re toasting with a glass of crisp white wine in Brda, savoring homemade štruklji (a traditional Slovenian dumpling), or enjoying freshly caught seafood by the coast, every meal here is an experience. And with Slovenia’s recent recognition as a top foodie destination, thanks in part to its Michelin-starred restaurants and focus on sustainability, you’ll have no trouble planning a post-ceremony meal that’s just as special as the day itself.

The Warmest Welcome

One of the most wonderful things about Slovenia is the people. Every time I visit, I am met with so much warmth and hospitality. English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas, and locals are more than happy to share their love for their country
Slovenia vs. Its More Famous Neighbors

Slovenia has all the romance and adventure of its more famous neighbors—Italy, Switzerland, Greece—but with a few key advantages:

  • Fewer Crowds – While Lake Como and Santorini are packed with tourists, Slovenia’s destinations feel more intimate and untouched. You won’t have to worry about elbowing through crowds to get the perfect wedding photos.
  • Affordability – Compared to Italy or Switzerland, a Slovenia elopement offers incredible experiences at a fraction of the price. It’s ideal for couples who want a luxury feel without the luxury price tag.
  • Accessibility & Ease – Slovenia is compact, making it easy to explore multiple regions in one trip. Plus, it’s well-connected to major European hubs, with Ljubljana’s airport offering direct flights to many cities

Eloping in Slovenia

If you’re sold on the idea of eloping in Slovenia, here are a few practical things to keep in mind:

  • Best Time to Elope in Slovenia – Spring (April-June) and fall (September-October) are ideal for mild weather, stunning scenery, and fewer tourists. Summer is gorgeous but busier, especially in places like Lake Bled and Piran.
  • Legal vs. Symbolic Ceremonies – Many couples opt for a legal ceremony at home and a symbolic one in Slovenia. However, if you’re set on legally marrying in Slovenia, it’s doable with some extra planning.
  • Hiring a Local Photographer & Planner for your Slovenia Elopement – Slovenia has a growing community of elopement photographers and planners who know the best locations, secret spots, and how to navigate local logistics. Choosing someone familiar with the area can make all the difference in ensuring a stress-free and magical experience.

Do the Whole Thing on Foot

I’d be remiss to say that I’m SO excited that Runcation has launched an option to run from hotel-to-hotel from Lake Bled to the Adriatic. Your Slovenia elopement could take place almost entirely on foot, giving you ample time to enjoy every corner. For adventurous couples, this could be an absolute dream. And, I’d love to meet you along the way.

Is a Slovenian Elopement Right for You?

If you’re looking for a destination that’s beautiful, diverse, and rich in culture — yet still feels intimate — let’s meet in Slovenia. If you’re ready to start planning your dream elopement, let’s make it happen.
