Niki and Alex joined me for a classic winter day at Cannon Beach for their engagement photos (I can’t wait for their wedding in May!). Both full of adventure, we had so much fun exploring my favorite little corners and views on this part of the coast. January on the Oregon Coast is definitely a gamble, weather wise, but the rain made for some classic, moody, moving photos! I’m so glad these two were game to stay outside and enjoy whatever the weather brought us.

Taking your engagement photos at Cannon Beach
Every square inch of the northern Oregon Coast has something to offer. Forests, sweeping grassy fields, sandy beaches, imposing black rock – with just an hour or two, we can explore a number of different types of geography.
Cannon Beach, specifically, is one of my favorite places to take couples because of its proximity to my home in Portland, as well as the accessibility to lesser-known, magical beaches. For those who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, or who’ve done their research, Haystack Rock is also an iconic symbol of the area. If you’re there at the right time, you’re almost guaranteed to spot elk slowly passing through.
Preparing for the weather
Keeping in mind that these photos were taken in January, you can encounter rain at any time of the year. Make sure to bring clothes you don’t mind getting sandy, as well as something dry to change into after your shoot.
Although the beaches are sandy, many of the trails have roots and rocks, so plan on wearing shoes for at least part (or most) of your shoot.
