Engagement Photos at Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach: The Ideal Location for Engagement Photos

Every square inch of the northern Oregon Coast has something to offer. Forests, sweeping grassy fields, sandy beaches, imposing black rock – with just an hour or two, we can explore a number of different types of geography. For engagement photos, I love using Cannon Beach as our jumping off point.

Rain or shine, Cannon Beach engagement photos encapsulate all of the wonders of the Oregon Coast. Those who grew up here will inevitably have so many childhood memories and photos with Haystack Rock in the background. If you’re there at the right time, you’re almost guaranteed to spot elk slowly passing through.

The Weather at Cannon Beach

The Oregon Coast has a reputation for being moody and unpredictable, and that’s part of its magic. Even in summer, you can expect shifting conditions – fog rolling in at sunrise, misty afternoons, or golden light breaking through the clouds just before sunset.

  • Spring and Summer: Mild temperatures (50s–70s), often breezy. You’ll get longer daylight hours, and while summer is busier, sunrise and sunset still feel quiet and intimate.
  • Fall: Some of the best light of the year – warm tones, fewer crowds, and a cozy chill in the air.
  • Winter: Dramatic skies, crashing waves, and solitude. You’ll want to bundle up, but the moody atmosphere is unbeatable.

The key is to embrace the weather as part of your story. A little wind in your hair or mist in the air adds to the romance of coastal photos.

What to Wear for Cannon Beach Engagement Photos

Your outfits should complement both the coastal setting and your personalities. Think comfortable, timeless, and layered – since the coast can shift from chilly to warm within minutes.

  • Colors: Earth tones, muted neutrals, or jewel tones look amazing against the sand, rocks, and sea. Soft blues, deep greens, and rust tones feel especially coastal.
  • Textures: Knits, linen, wool coats, or flowy fabrics that catch the wind all photograph beautifully.
  • Shoes: Barefoot is always an option! But do bring something to start out in, since we may be walking over rocks and logs initially.
  • Bring Layers: A cozy sweater, blanket, or jacket keeps you comfortable and adds variety to your gallery.

Definitely wear clothing that moves well. Even if we aren’t hiking, we may still be walking up and down dunes and short trails. I also love the look of moving fabric when the wind catches it.

Note that if you’re uncomfortable getting dirty or sandy, we’ll do our best. But generally, wear things you don’t mind getting a little bit of sand on. And be aware that some sneaky waves may find their way to your ankles.

Avoid distractions: Try to avoid bright logos, bold or tight patterns. Really bright or neon colors can clash with the environment, reflect onto skin, or steal attention from your connection with each other. In short, simple is best: solids, soft tones, and clean lines always photograph more beautifully and age better over time.

Most importantly, wear something you feel good in. I want you to feel confident and comfortable.

Planning Activities for your Engagement Photos

Bringing props, pets, and generally things to “do” during your engagement shoot can be a great way to get your mind off of the camera and bring some levity to your shoot.

I had couples bring dogs, camper vans, beer and champagne, cupcakes, their own Polaroid cameras, guitars, etc. It’s such a fun way to show off your personality and make the shoot feel even more like a regular day with your bestie.

That said, anything you bring along should be comfortable, natural, and something you’d enjoy doing “in real life.” You want to look back and say “heck yeah, that’s so us!”
